Phantasmagoria by Nonnie Augustine

While the gatekeeper sleeps, they slip
in to blind her with the unbidden power
of baroque memories heavy with sex,
jealous pain, shrouded meanings.
They direct her spirit to weave down
slick sidewalks of night-wild streets.
Sly intruders take her torso,
lift her breasts toward clever lips
as, eyes shut, sensate red-shot
black takes her back to the swirl
of memory in momentary lapses
of the present tense.
